Looking Back
Prelude

October 14, 2022

I've had a feeling of deja vu from something I said or read recently, and I've been minded of a blog I wrote on my website about Lady Elizabeth Eastlake and Caroline Herschel. And finding the piece, re‑reading it, I'm aware that I wrote it a decade ago – almost exactly to the day – in October 2012.

Then, in a further outbreak of coincidence, I realise that it's five decades ago – yes 50 years ago this month – that I came up to Leeds (from the south of England) after a gap-year, and I started University. So you'll understand – be unsurprised – that I'm in nostalgic mood.

Don't I look young!

That original informal, chatty 'blog-diary' is no longer available on this site – replaced by the more reserved, more thoughtful 'Journal' – but I've enjoyed re-connecting with the different pieces I wrote. So this mini-project aims to excavate some of them from the elephants graveyard of my online blogs, to re‑fresh them (where necessary) and to add a 'looking back', retrospective commentary.
